The Story Behind The Gold Standard in Background Screening®

I’ve been around background screening since I was twelve years old. Which, admittedly, is probably not what most twelve-year-olds would choose to spend their time thinking about. But somewhere along the way, this industry became part of who I am. And the idea of building a company of my own stayed with me.

Long before AB Global had a name, I had a vision for how I wanted people to feel when they worked with us: heard, supported and confident that someone cared about getting it right.

That vision eventually became the foundation of The Gold Standard in Background Screening®.

To understand what those words mean to me, you have to understand why I started AB Global.

Learning the work, and seeing the people behind it

Over the years, I worked in verifications, criminal processing, quality assurance, account management, marketing and sales. I learned the details of the work and saw how each part affected the next.

A missed detail could create another round of follow-up. An unclear answer could leave an HR team unsure of what to tell a hiring manager. A delay could leave a candidate wondering when they’d be able to start a job they needed.

When you’ve worked through those situations yourself, you see a background report differently.

You see the employer trying to make a thoughtful decision. The HR professional juggling a dozen other priorities. The person waiting for an opportunity.

You also learn how much a simple, honest conversation can help.

Sometimes you can solve the problem immediately. Sometimes you’re waiting on a court, an employer or another source. Either way, the person asking deserves an answer that helps them understand what’s happening.

The part I couldn’t accept

I love this industry. I’ve spent much of my life in it, and I know the good it can do.

That’s also why it was difficult to see care and transparency get lost along the way.

I saw situations where clients were given an answer to quiet a concern, even when it didn’t really address the problem. I saw promises that sounded wonderful during the sales process become much harder to recognize once the client was onboarded.

And I kept coming back to the same thought: people deserved better.

They deserved honest expectations, thoughtful service and a partner who would stay engaged when things became complicated.

By 2018, I was ready to build the company I’d spent years imagining.

Was I scared? Absolutely. Having a vision and being responsible for making it work are two very different experiences. There’s no handbook that covers every decision you’ll face as a founder, although I would have happily purchased one.

But I knew what I wanted our foundation to be.

Care. Integrity. Accountability. And a willingness to do the work behind the promise.

Giving the standard meaning

“The Gold Standard” carries a high expectation. It should.

For me, those words grew out of the way I wanted AB Global to operate: paying attention to the details, being honest with clients and taking responsibility for the experience we provide.

That meant building care into how we work.

Our dedicated Client Concierge model reflects something I believe deeply: relationships matter. Clients should have someone who knows them, understands their needs and takes their questions seriously.

Our transition team helps carry that same care into onboarding. Changing providers already adds work to an HR team’s plate. Guidance, training and clear communication can make that change feel manageable.

Education matters, too. Through Screening University and our educational resources, we help clients understand the questions and responsibilities that come with screening. I’ve always loved sharing knowledge. A client who feels more informed is better equipped to make thoughtful decisions.

And as our technology evolves, I want it to make people’s jobs easier. More visibility. Less chasing for answers. Clearer next steps.

Each of those choices gives the words “The Gold Standard” something practical to stand on.

Care includes the hard conversations

Care is easy to talk about when everything is going smoothly.

The real test comes when a report is delayed, someone is frustrated or we discover something that needs to be corrected.

Those moments call for honesty and follow-through. They call for listening without becoming defensive, explaining what we know and taking the next step we’ve committed to taking.

We’re human. We’ll have challenges, and we’ll find things we can improve. I want our team to feel responsible for addressing those things and supported in doing so.

That’s how trust grows over time.

A standard we keep working toward

One of my strongest beliefs is that every interaction is an opportunity to leave someone better than you found them.

I bring that belief into how I lead, how we support our clients and how we develop our team.

Sometimes leaving someone better means solving a problem. Sometimes it means sharing knowledge. Sometimes it means telling the truth with kindness, even when the answer is difficult.

The Gold Standard in Background Screening® is rooted in all of those moments.

I’m proud of what we’ve built at AB Global. I’m especially proud of the people who bring this vision to life through their everyday work, including the effort clients may never see.

The dream I had years ago has grown into a company with a team, clients and relationships I care deeply about.

And the responsibility I feel toward them continues to shape what we build next.
Lead with care. Leave people better.
That’s where our Gold Standard began. And it’s how we keep earning the trust behind it.

For decades, background screening has largely answered one question: Who is this person at the time we hire them? But today's workforce is changing, and so is the risk. Remote and hybrid work, sophisticated identity fraud, artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and increasingly distributed workforces are challenging the idea that identity and risk can be verified once and considered settled. The next evolution of background screening isn't simply continuous monitoring. It's continuous identity.
In the employment background screening industry, a lot is expected: employers need to make an employment decision quickly, reports must be accurate, and personal information must be handled properly and securely. A consumer reporting agency (CRA) must comply with numerous federal, state, and local legal requirements.
